Summer Show Time!

It's show time again for Jimmy! The summer show is always a bit different. There is an outside area open only in the summer, so it's a larger show. Jim worked so hard for weeks getting his items all cleaned and priced and ready to tempt his buyers! He loves it. After a rocky start with Duane's truck going out on the the way to unload all his goodies on Thursday, the Early Bird show on Friday was a great success. You just have to go with the flow and Jim did quite well!

Jim invited our son in law Eric, to come and join him. Eric is into watches and this was his first show. It was really fun to have him with us on Friday! Don't these two look cool? Eric will be back on Sunday.

You can see our neighbor's littel family in the background. We met them a few years back at the show and were so happy to be next to them again. Little Wilder is 41/2 already! He is sooo cute!

I have dinner ready for my Jimmy with fresh Oregon berries. I know he'll be tired, but happy tonight. I've chatted with him a few times and he's been having another great day! He sure enjoys his retirement "job"! I'll be helping him pack up tomorrow. I've lost track of how many shows he's done now. He does about 4-5 a year. It sure keeps him out of trouble...ha ha ha!

Tea Time Thursday #20

Happy Tea Time Thursday! Summer is moving right along and the weather has cooled down a bit, so I am happier. I am still coughing just a bit but I am finally just about over this bug. Yeah!

I love Shelley tea cups. Until recently, I didn't have one in my tea cup collection. We were at a sale and Jimmy made a deal with the lady and we brought home a few. They are so beautiful and I love the scalloped cup.

We are lucky to have many ethnic markets in the Portland area. Jimmy and I like to visit a Russian market that has the best candies, teas and tea time goodies. The owners are so fun and always give us something to try or enjoy. I love all their different teas. This is a loose leaf fruit tea from Poland. I think it will make a great iced tea for summer.

We watched a very beautiful movie the other night....Howards End. I don't know how I missed this one, but I'm so glad I finally got to watch and enjoy it. The costumes are exquisite and the photography is stunning. It's based on a 1910 novel by E M Forester.

Some of my favorite actors and actresses makes for a great film. The documentary was also really interesting.

This is a real home that was used in the movie....this is Howard End. The home plays a big part in the movie. It just looks like a Peter Rabbit house to me.

Just makes you want a cuppa! 

Almost Show Time!

It's almost show time! My Jimmy has been working hard for weeks cleaning and pricing his goodies for the Expo Antique and Collectible summer show. He's packing up his tubs today and tomorrow Duane will help him haul it all over to the show. I'll be there Friday to set up. Eric and Gina will be down from Seattle to help. Eric will be showing and selling his watches. Stop and see us if you are planning to go. It's a large show and always fun!

A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon

I love daisies! I had them in my wedding almost 40 years ago. The daisies always bloom around the 4th of July here in Troutdale and make me think of summer!

I am feeling better but the cough is still hanging on...sigh. I am hoping that it will be GONE this week.
Jim went to a few sales but I didn't feel like going. Chris, Angie and Ava stopped by to show us Chris' new 1965 truck that he just bought. Ava came loaded with lots of "show and tell"and Angie is looking so good with only 3 weeks to go until baby Otto arrives!

Jim arrived back home and we decided we were all ready to eat, so Ang and Jim went to get some takeout. We sat outside and had dinner together! It was just so fun and so nice. The perfect afternoon~not to hot, not to cool. This is what I like about summer. I hope you had a lovely Sunday afternoon too.

Tasha Tudor First Friday Book Review~JACKANAPES

This month's Tasha Tudor book review is on a small book titled JACKANAPES that was published in 1948 by Oxford University Press and is 62 pages long. It includes some full color illustrations and several black and white drawings. It is not a highly collected book and it was difficult to find much information about why Tasha chose this book to illustrate.

The book was written by Juliana Horatia Ewing who was a late Victorian writer of children's books. She lived from 1841 to 1885. This picture was taken in London, England in 1884.

The story is about a little boy who is an orphan. His father was in the Waterloo Cavalry and was killed in battle. Three days after his birth, his mother dies, so he is raised by his spinster aunt. He becomes good friends with a little boy named Tony Johnson. Tony and Jackanapes are two very different littel boys and have different abilities. At the end of the book,Jackanapes gives his life for Tony in battle. Not Tasha's usual type of book or story, but interesting. It seemed like a good subject for this July 4th weekend.

Origianlly, the book was first published in 1879 without any illustrations. Four years later, Juliana reissued an illustrated version. It was illustrated by Randolph Caldecott. Below is a picture of that copy. You can read more about it at the Victorian Web.

I found this to be a charming book and a different type of book for Tasha to publish. It's not real easy to find, but worth the hunt and the read.

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July! I hope you enjoyed your holiday and spent some time thinking about your country and what it means to live in America. Things have changed and I may not like all of these changes, but I am still thankful to live in a free country.
Jim and I canceled out plans for today as I am still fighting this cold and cough. I just don't have much energy for much of anything. I have been watching a lot of really interesting programs on PBS this holiday season.

It's just getting dark here in Oregon and the fireworks have begun in the neighborhood. Boom, boom, boom!

One of the programs I watched was called Anthem and it was the story of our national anthem written by Francis Scott Key. I would guess that you feel as I do that it's a difficult song to sing. After watching the show, I will never quite feel the same now that I know the history behind the song.

I also watched one on Lady Liberty...the Statue of Liberty. I do hope that I will get to see it someday before my life is over! It reopened today after being closed for eight months after hurricane Sandy did quite a bit of damage to the surrounding grounds and Ellis Island. What a grand lady!

Of course we have to think of our first president on this day!

And of course, I can't forget Mr Lincoln, one of my favorites. Tonight I heard someone on TV say that no other president has done as much to save our country as Lincoln did. This year is also the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettsyburg. I wish  I could make a visit there too.

So as the day slips away with a big bang, I find myself thinking about my ancestors who so bravely left their homeland to come to AMERICA! Happy Birthday America. God Bless America!

Yikes...Sick and Very Hot Summer Weather!

A stubborn cough started up last week and hit me big time on Sunday. Just when I was getting back on track with my blogging, I haven't been up for much of anything. I slept Sunday away and do feel a bit better today.
The very hot weather that the entire West has been dealing with for almost a week, has been just that~HOT HOT HOT!!!! We've been in the 90's for days. Not a good combo with being sick.
Our daughter gave us a nice portable AC a few years ago and Jimmy brought it over first thing this morning. Thank you Angie! It makes so much difference.
I have been doing a bit of work sorting through things and getting my cottage/studio set up. I am just so anxious to get it done.
